HSH Prince Rainier III of Monaco, born on May 31, 1923 he succeeded his mother Hereditary Princess Charlotte as heir to the Monegasque throne and on May 9, 1949 he succeeded his grandfather Prince Louis II as Sovereign of Monaco. He had covered himself in glory during World War II with the French artillery and succeeded in taking Monaco from post-war ruin to the most prosperous and glamorous resort on the Riviera. He also ensured further economic growth by diversifying beyond the gambling mainstay. His marriage to the American actress Grace Kelly brought world attention to Monaco and ruled over the principality with fatherly care and wisdom for over 50 years before his death in 2005.
